Guide Review - Review of Old-School Board Game ‘Scrabble’ for Pre, iPhone, Blackberry, Windows
One of the 5 must-have launch games on the Apple iPad!
Scrabble is a classic and the mobile version captures the essence. As with the original board game, you use seven letters to make the best word possible. Each letter is worth a certain number of points when used and, when you hit a bonus square, you’ll get triple points, double word score or another boost. It supports up to four players, which makes it great for road trips, but, surprisingly, it can only be done on one phone – no games with long-distance friends (though some other versions, like on the iPhone, support wi-fi). Luckily, the computer is a whip smart opponent, too, and will give even Scrabble veterans a run for their money even on Normal mode (there are three difficulty levels). Wireless multiplayer aside, the only problem here are the limited dictionaries. There are two options here – the Merriam Webster dictionary and the official TWL Scrabble edition – but the Merriam one didn’t seem up to snuff. For instance, the game didn’t recognize the word “Qatar”, which is a major state in the Middle East. It’s almost like Scrabble not acknowledging “Kuwait” or “Persia” as a word. Most folks will be happy with the dictionaries and with Scrabble, and it’s definitely work giving a spin.
