Guide Review - Review of Sports Game 'NFL 2011' for the Apple iPhone, iPod and iPad
Gameloft’s NFL 2010 hit the ground running last year, and the new edition seems to cater more towards the pick-up-and-play audience than the hardcore armchair quarterbacks. It’s about as streamlined as you can get: Launch the game, choose a team, pick a play and run it. The simple approach really shines in the playbook which are neatly organized, don’t seem to be team specific and are ranked from 1 – 10 based on effectiveness in the current situation. Compare this to Madden NFL 2011 where the 300+ plays per team and create-your-own opportunities may intimidate a casual gamer. There isn’t a collection of stats, either, but the gameplay modes include exhibition, playoffs and the monstrous season – all of which are saved if you end up getting interrupted by a phone call. The controls are not unlike last year’s edition – touchpad joystick on the left, player select and action buttons on the right – with the cool addition of tilt movement to control your jukes. Unfortunately, NFL 2011 has the same Achilles Heel as its closest competitor: No multiplayer mode. And, unlike Madden NFL 2011, there isn’t confirmation that the multiplayer is coming in a later update. It hurts the title, as this game of football emphasizes the arcade-action experience more than the stats-heavy Madden. NFL 2011 is not a bad follow-up to last year’s success, but it doesn’t add much to the table beyond updated stats.
