Guide Review - Game Review of Strategy Game ‘Doom 2 RPG’ for iPhone and iPod Touch
Inspired by the popular first-person shooter series, Doom 2 RPG is like turning the FPS into a board game. After choosing between three differently skilled marines, you must investigate and, later, rid different nearby planets of their monster infestation. As expected, there are lots of nasty zombies and ugly aliens and nightmarish beasties. Doom 2 RPG never gets too scary, probably because of the turn-based pace, but it does have a steady sense of surprise – you could be talking with a human survivor and, it mid-sentence, he suddenly starts gurgling and turns into a monster. Fun stuff. Every move takes a “turn”, so changing weapons, using items or moving around while facing an enemy must be done strategically. The three difficulty levels are a nice tough, with the basic one, Normal, challenging enough for the average gamer. The touch controls, which use a virtual pad to turn and a finger swipe to strife left or right, are tight enough for a traditional FPS, so they feel great in this slower-paced game. Hardcore shooter fans may be turned off by the thriller-esque character development and strategic elements, but Doom 2 RPG adds a nice twist to the two-decade old Doom scenario.
